Farah Rumy’s story is one of dedication, hard work, and quiet determination. At just 34 years old, she has made history as the first person of Sri Lankan origin to be elected to Switzerland’s Federal Parliament.
Born in Colombo, Farah later moved to Switzerland, where she built her life around caring for others. Trained as a nurse, she went on to work in healthcare and teaching, becoming deeply involved in community service and public wellbeing.

Her passion for helping people naturally led her into politics. She began her political journey in the Solothurn Cantonal Council, where she focused on issues close to her heart, including healthcare, social welfare, and equality.
That commitment has now taken her to the National Council, representing the Social Democratic Party. Farah Rumy’s achievement is being celebrated by many, especially within the Sri Lankan diaspora, as a powerful reminder that background is no barrier to leadership and that meaningful change often starts with serving people.
