The Leading Causes of Death in Sri Lanka

June 7, 2026

In 2026, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for approximately 83% of all deaths in Sri Lanka. Heart disease and stroke remain the leading causes of death, followed by cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, and kidney disease. These health conditions are becoming more common due to an aging population and lifestyle changes.

Factors such as unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and obesity significantly increase the risk of these diseases. Diabetes and high blood pressure also contribute to serious complications, including heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. In addition, road traffic accidents continue to be a major cause of preventable deaths across the country.

To reduce these deaths, Sri Lanka must focus on promoting healthier lifestyles, encouraging regular health screenings, and improving access to preventive healthcare. Early detection and better public awareness can play a key role in improving the nation’s overall health and well-being.
