The gendered pandemic: Reversing equality by decades
Virtually no crisis of the present day is gender-neutral, and Covid-19 is no exception. While the pandemic lockdowns were supposed to keep people safe and relieved in their homes, it was a period that made many women around the world feel unsafe more than ever
Gender equality in the pre-pandemic era vs. during the pandemic
All reports indicate significant improvement in gender equality in every sphere in the recent past. According to UN Women, the past decade has made more progress than ever in the history of the UN, with more girls going to school, fewer forced into early marriages and laws reformed to advance gender equality.
However, the coronavirus outbreak exacerbated existing inequalities for women and girls from health and the economy to security and social protection. The United Nations recently warned that Covid-19 is likely to set gender equality back by decades
Violence against women and the loss of reproductive rights
The Covid-19 pandemic caused schools to shut down and healthcare systems to overflow with unprecedented infection rates.
The closure of such institutions, once responsible for protecting women and children from domestic violence, along with the set of worldwide lockdowns, immediately saw the emergence of the "shadow pandemic" (UN Women)
Every three months of lockdown reported 15 million more cases of domestic violence against women compared to the UNFPA projections. Furthermore, the UNFPA expects 7 million unintended pregnancies in the coming months due to the lack of contraception due to the pandemic.
Unequal economic impact
As Covid-19 triggered the biggest economic recession since the great depression, women are bearing the brunt of the economic fallout caused.
It has a vast impact on the ability of women to engage in paid work. Women, who already did four times more unpaid care work than men in Asia and the Pacific (ILO), had to take care of children and sick relatives due to the closure of schools and the health systems overload.
However, women who are breadwinners to their families, do not have the privilege of staying safe at home. The gender pay gap compounds the inequality even more, making it harder for women to meet their families' basic needs.
Conclusion
Although existing inequalities were intensified by the outcomes of the pandemic, it is not possible to wait and expect it to fade away along with the pandemic at the cost of many lives
