Experiencing ROTASIA: A Global Youth Leadership Movement in Action

March 27, 2026

In February 2026, I had the privilege of representing Sri Lanka and the Maldives at ROTASIA 2026, one of the largest youth leadership conferences in Asia organized by the global volunteer network of Rotaract under Rotary International.

The conference, hosted by Rotaract District 3233 was held in Mahabalipuram, Chennai, India. It brought together hundreds of young leaders from across Asia between the 4th and 8th of February. I attended in my capacity as the District Club Service Director representing Rotaract District 3220 (Sri Lanka and Maldives), joining delegates from countries including India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal, and Pakistan.

What made the experience truly remarkable was the diversity. Even within India itself, Rotaractors from Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and many other regions brought their own cultures, languages, and traditions to the conference. The atmosphere was incredibly vibrant, with every conversation becoming an opportunity to understand a new perspective and build friendships across borders.

The conference agenda was thoughtfully designed, combining leadership development, business insights, youth wellness, and the values of service that define the Rotary movement. One of the most inspiring sessions was delivered by Mr. Sujith Kumar, founder of the Maatram Foundation, who shared his journey from being an Interactor and Rotaractor to building an organisation that has helped thousands of underprivileged students pursue education. His story powerfully demonstrated how youth service movements can grow into initiatives that transform entire communities.

Another highlight of the event was the exceptional hosting by Britto Mano, a professional actor who served as the conference compere. His energy, humour, and ability to manage a large audience made the entire event flow seamlessly, keeping participants engaged throughout the programme.

Beyond the sessions, the conference also opened doors for collaboration between districts. Conversations around future partnerships, cultural exchanges, and joint initiatives took place constantly, showing how a global network of young people can work together for positive change.

Following the conference, the International Service team of Rotaract District 3220 organised a post-tour to Pondicherry and Chennai. This gave our Sri Lankan delegation an opportunity to experience the region’s unique French-influenced culture in Pondicherry while strengthening friendships within our own district.

Experiences like ROTASIA highlight the scale and impact of the Rotary and Rotaract movement. What many people may not realise is that across the world, thousands of young professionals volunteer their time to lead projects, build international friendships, and create meaningful social change.

For any young person interested in leadership, service, and global exposure, platforms like ROTASIA show just how powerful youth-led movements can be.
And most importantly, they remind us that when young leaders from different cultures come together with a shared purpose, the possibilities for impact are truly limitless
