ICBS Students Lead with Heart: Project SMILE Blood Donation Drive a Resounding Success

June 25, 2025

In a powerful demonstration of compassion and leadership, the Year 1 Semester 2 students of the International Business & Finance programme at Imperial College of Business Studies (ICBS) successfully organized a community-centered blood donation campaign under the banner of their CSR initiative, Project SMILE.

The event brought together students, staff members, and members of the public who stepped forward to contribute to a life-saving cause. With a simple but powerful message — “Donate Blood, Save Lives” — the campaign inspired dozens of donors to take action and make a tangible difference.

Fostering a Culture of Responsibility

Project SMILE, initiated by the student cohort as part of their commitment to social responsibility, represents the broader vision of ICBS: developing not only academically strong graduates but socially conscious leaders of tomorrow. The blood donation drive served as the first chapter in what promises to be a series of community-impact initiatives carried out by the students.

“Organizing this campaign allowed us to step outside the classroom and engage directly with a cause that matters. It taught us the power of teamwork, empathy, and civic duty,” shared one of the student organizers.

The Impact of One Donation

According to the National Blood Transfusion Service, a single blood donation can save up to three lives. This campaign wasn’t just a symbolic act — it was a life-giving force. The collective effort and spirit shown by the ICBS community ensured that hospitals and patients across the country would benefit from the generosity of young changemakers.

A Proud Moment for ICBS

The success of the campaign stands as a testament to ICBS’s commitment to holistic education — nurturing not only intellectual growth but also values of kindness, initiative, and public service. The event was held at the Sri Vajirarama Temple in Colombo 04, a serene and welcoming venue that added a spiritual dimension to an already meaningful day.

Faculty members, administrators, and community leaders expressed their appreciation for the students’ initiative, emphasizing the importance of embedding real-world impact within higher education.

Looking Ahead

Project SMILE has only just begun. With this successful campaign as a foundation, ICBS students are already planning the next phases of their CSR journey — tackling issues such as education, environment, and mental health. The impact made by this blood donation drive will continue to ripple across the community, serving as a reminder of what can be achieved when youth take the lead.
